Our Story

Built by People Who Hate Horse Flies

The Fly Cage was born from a simple frustration: nothing on the market actually worked. So we built something that did.

The Problem We Set Out to Solve

If you've ever owned horses, lived near water, or tried to enjoy a summer afternoon outside in the eastern United States, you know the frustration. Horse flies, deer flies, and greenheads can turn a beautiful day into a miserable experience.

We tried everything — sprays that washed off in minutes, zappers that caught moths instead of horse flies, citronella that did absolutely nothing against visual predators. Nothing worked because none of it was designed around how biting flies actually behave.

Then we learned the science: horse flies hunt by sight, not smell. And when disturbed, they always — always — fly upward. That single biological insight changed everything.

The Fly Cage was designed in the USA. It's built with powder-coated aluminum and marine-grade mesh because we believe that if you're going to solve a problem, you should solve it once and solve it right.

About Tom Pray

My name is Tom Pray. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Entomology from the University of New Hampshire and have spent more than 27 years working in the pest control industry. I am licensed as a supervisory pesticide applicator in both Maine and New Hampshire and have worked for both small independent companies and large national pest control firms, gaining extensive hands-on experience in the science and practical control of insects.

For the past 20 years I have owned and operated Ecotech Pest Control Services, a pest management company serving more than 1,000 residential and commercial clients throughout the Northeast. My work has always focused on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), an approach that emphasizes understanding insect behavior and managing the environment to control pests while minimizing chemical use.

Early in my career I worked in municipal mosquito control programs along the New Hampshire Seacoast, covering several coastal communities. These programs not only focused on mosquitoes but also on biting flies—especially Greenhead flies—which are notorious for making outdoor activities miserable in coastal areas. Much of the work involved building and placing wooden traps in salt marshes to control fly populations.

After starting my own pest control company, homeowners constantly asked me the same question: “How do you get rid of biting flies?” The traditional methods were labor-intensive, expensive, and impractical for most people.

Because of my background in entomology and years of field experience, I began working on a simpler and more practical solution. That process ultimately led to the invention of the patented Fly Cage, a device designed to capture and remove biting flies without relying on chemicals or pesticides.

In addition to running my pest control business, I regularly speak to community organizations and schools about pest prevention, tick management, and environmentally responsible pest control. I’ve spent my entire career studying insects and helping people better understand how to live with—and control—them.
